18 dead as ex-MP's hotel set on fire in Jashore

An angry crowd set fire to Jabir International Residential Hotel in Jashore after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation on Monday, leaving 18 people dead and 30 injured.
Among the deceased are Chaion, 20, and Sejan Hossain, 19. The identities of the other victims could not be know till Monday night.
Jashore District Awami League General Secretary and former member of parliament Shaheen Chakladar is the owner of the hotel.
Mamunur Rashid, assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Jashore said, "We recovered 18 bodies till 10:30 pm. Rescue is ongoing."
It cannot be said without investigation what caused the fire, he added.
Haroon Rashid, superintendent of Jashore General Hospital, said many of the injured were in critical condition. He said most of the dead and injured were students.
On Monday afternoon, thousands of students gathered at Chitra Mor, Chaurasta Mor and Daratana Mor in Jashore town, celebrating what they perceived as a victory.
Later in the afternoon, some individuals set fire to Jabir International Residential Hotel, vandalising its furniture.
They also targeted the residence of Jashore-3 MP Kazi Nabil Ahmed and set it on fire, as well as vandalising the district Awami League office.
In addition, miscreants vandalised the homes of Sharsha Upazila Vice Chairman A Rahim Sardar and Swachhasebak League President Abul Hossain.
They also attacked the Awami League office in Benapole, vandalised Jubo League President Aheduzzaman's house and set fire to the Wood Sun restaurant.
