18 get life in Khulna lawyer killing case

A court in Khulna on Wednesday sentenced 18 people to life term imprisonment for killing a lawyer in 2000. The lifers are Sunil Boidya, Subhash Mandol, Arun Biswas, Amar Sarkar, Basudeb Sarkar, Nripen Biswas, Binoy Sarder, Joyonto Sardar, Tapos Biswas, Birendra Nath, alias Girendra Nath Biswas, Pulin Biswas, Madhab Biswas, Bhola Sardar, Gobinda Biswas, Sudhangsu Mandol, Bidhan Mandol, Dipak Sardar and Abdul Majid alias Malu. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each, in default to suffer 1 year more in jail. A gang of miscreants attacked Durgapada Mandol, a lawyer of Khulna District Judge’s Court, and beat him mercilessly while he was visiting agriculture fields at Laudob village in Dacope on July 21, 2000, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital where he died. Tapan Mandol, the victim’s nephew, filed a case with Dacope Police Station in this connection on July 24, 2000. The charge-sheet was submitted on November 06, 2005. After examining the records and witnesses, Madina Begum, the judge of the District Special and Sessions Judge's Court, pronounced the judgment, according to UNB.
