18 held in Bandarban en route to Malaysia

Police detained 18 people in Lama Upazila in Bandarban district early Saturday when they were being sent to Malaysia illegally. A suspected trafficker was also arrested. The victims hail from different Upazilas of Barisal, Sylhet, Feni, Comilla and Noakhali districts. Being tipped off, a police team conducted a drive in Kumari village and detained them from an abandoned house at one Anisur Rahman’s rubber garden around 12:30am. Police also arrested Abul Hossain, caretaker of the garden, allegedly for making attempt to smuggle out the 18 people to Malaysia with promise of better employement there. Police said a gang of human traffickers had brought them in Kumari village a few days ago promising them that they will be sent to Malaysia from there. A case was filed, according to a news agency.
