The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has taken a major initiative to develop roads and other infrastructure in its 18 new wards located on the edges of the city corporation areas.
To develop roads, drainage system and canals in these newly added wards, the DNCC has undertaken a project involving Tk 40.25 billion, officials said.
The 18 youngest wards cover areas under Harirampur, Uttarkhan, Dakkhinkhan, Dumni, Berayed, Vatara, Badda and Santarkul unions.
In June 2016, the DNCC brought these unions under the city corporation, creating the new wards.
Under the project, the DNCC will construct 179 km roads and develop 230 km drainage system and 28.51 km canals, said a senior official.
It will also install 11,974 LED streetlights to ensure smooth traffic system.
"The DNCC has undertaken a Tk 40.25 billion project. We have sent the project proposal
to the Planning Commission for approval," said the official.
"We will start development work at the 18 newly incorporated wards soon after receiving approval," he added.
The 18 wards stretch over an area of 114.56 square kilometres (sq km).
Earlier, the total area of the DNCC was 82.62 sq km. With the new wards, the DNCC now has a total area of 197.18 sq km.
The population of the DNCC has also increased -- about 1.5 times as many as before.
A Local Government Division (LGD) official said, "We have taken a massive initiative to improve infrastructure in the newly added wards since they are lagging behind in development."
Like other areas of the city corporations, the youngest wards will also get a new look, he said.
In 2016, the DNCC and the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) simultaneously took up projects involving Tk 10.26 billion and Tk 12.16 billion respectively for developing roads, drains and canals.
Besides, some other infrastructure development projects are also being implemented in both the city corporation areas.
