18 police officials, including DB's Harun, suspended

The government on Monday suspended 18 police officials, including former detective branch (DB) head of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammad Harun-ur-Rashid, according to a notice issued by the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The document was signed by Nasimul Ghani, deputy secretary, following the president's order.
The suspended officers include three deputy inspector generals (DIGs), six additional DIGs, four police superintendents (SPs), four additional police superintendents, and one assistant police superintendent.
The notification states the 18 officers have been suspended under Rule 12(1) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018, as they are accused of offenses punishable by dismissal.
The officers will continue to receive their allowances during their suspension.
Among the temporality suspended police officials, Harun -ur-Rashid has been absent from his office since August 05, 2024.
According to media reports, Harun gained notoriety for engaging in torture in custody. He also gained public attention for feeding rice to opposition figures in custody and recording videos of the incidents.
The other suspended officials include former Dhaka range DIG Syed Nurul Islam; former Dhaka district superintendent of police Md Asaduzzaman; former head of DB DIG Md Ashrafuzzaman; former joint commissioner of DB Sanjit Kumar Roy; Shymal Kumar Mukherjee who was attached with Rajshahi range DIG office; and former additional DIG of Tourist Police Md Moniruzzaman.
The suspended officials also include: former joint commissioner of DMP Rifat Rahman Shamim; Khagrachari specialised training centre's former additional DIG Md Jayedul Alam and Chhattogram Hill District RAB-10 APBN former captain Mohammad Farid Uddin.
DMP north division former deputy commissioner (DC) Ashraful Azim; former Dhaka district superintendent of police Md Asaduzzaman; Md Abu Maruf Hossain, who was attached with ATU, and Ayesha Siddiqa who was attached with Rajshahi range DIG office, are also among the suspended.
The other suspended officials are Khulna Police Training Centre's former additional police superintendent Hasan Arafat; Rajan Kumar Das, who was attached with Ukheia, Cox's Bazar APBN; Mirza Salahuddin of Police Staff College; Rashedul Islam, additional deputy police commissioner of Barishal Metropolitan Police; and Md Habibullah, assistant police superintendent of Police Staff College.
