The First International Conference of Young Economists 2007 (ICYE '07), organised by the Young Economists' Forum (YEF) of North South University (NSU), was held at a city hotel Sunday.
University Grants' Commission (UGC) Chairman Nazrul Islam inaugurated the daylong conference as the chief guest.
NSU Foundation board of governors Chairman Benajir Ahmed was present in the programme as the guest of honour. NSU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Hafiz GA Siddiqi Chaired the session.
BRAC University CGS Research Associate Haydory Akbar Ahmed delivered the keynote speech on "Autonomy of Bangladesh Bank: Some Thoughts".
M Ali Rashid, Gour Gobinda Goswami, faculty adviser, YEF and Anik Ashraf, president of YEF also spoke on the occasion.
A number of faculty, students, and young professionals from Bangladesh, China, India, and Sri Lanka attended the daylong event.
The UGC chairman, in his speech on the occasion said, the conference is very unique, as it is organised by the young students of economics themselves. He mentioned that the UGC always emphasises providing quality education, particularly in higher education.
The NSU VC said research is the key to development of young minds. It is through research that the young inquisitive minds learn to ask questions and seek answers, identify problems, and strive to find the underlying reasons and solutions.
