2 bodies recovered, 100 passengers rescued alive

The bodies of two women were recovered while many remained missing after ‘Pinak 6’ launch with 350 passengers on board sank in Padma River near Mawa Ghat at Lauhajung Upazila in Munshiganj district on Monday. Acting Superintendent of Police Zakir Hossain Majumder said the bodies of two unidentified women were recovered from the river in the afternoon. Police and witnesses said the accident took place when the passenger-packed river craft ‘Pinak-6’ from Kawrakandi capsized in the vast waterways 800 yards off Mawa Ghat (jetty) around 11:15am due to strong current while it was heading towards the jetty. Md Iqbal Hossain, an official of Launch Owners’ Association, said there were 350 passengers in the launch. Deputy Commissioner Md Saiful Hasan said 100 passengers were rescued alive while many others remained missing, according to UNB.
