2 confess to killing Rahat

Two accused have reportedly confessed to killing Rahat after abducting the eight-year-old schoolboy on August 2 in Sherpur. Sherpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Hakim Bulbul Ahmed recorded the statements of Aslam Miah and Robin Miah under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on Sunday. Arafat Islam Rahat, 8, a Class-I student of a local school and son of Shahidul Islam of Girdanarayanpur in Sherpur town, was kidnapped allegedly by his aunt’s husband Abdul Latif in the afternoon. Later, he demanded Tk0.2 million as ransom from his parents. Failing to get the ransom money, Latif along with his three associates took the boy to Madhutila Eco Park and strangled him there. Police arrested Abdul Latif, 22, Aslam Miah, 21, Robin Miah, 20, and Imran Hasan, 21, from different parts of the town on August 4. Later, Rahat’s decomposed body was recovered from a hillock near Madhutila Eco Park in Nalitabari upazila on August 8. Meanwhile, residents of the district town staged demonstrations protesting the killing of the boy and demanded capital punishment to the killers, according to a news agency.
