CHITTAGONG, May 23 (BSS): Two foreign countries recently showed their keen interest in either to relocate their ship-building industries to Bangladesh or place orders to the CDDL for building new vessels for them.
This was disclosed by Industries Adviser Geeteara Safiya Chowdhury here Wednesday.
"Envoys of two foreign countries in Dhaka have shown their interest during separate meetings with me recently and there would be more discussion on this matter," she said.
Bangladesh has ample scopes to attract huge local and foreign investments in the prospective shipbuilding industry and can also earn substantial amount of foreign exchange by building new vessels for the world market.
Officials of the Chittagong Dry Dock Limited (CDDL) made this observation while they were apprising Industries Adviser of the overall state of the organisation here Wednesday.
If proper steps were taken to solve some problems of the CDDL, they said country's only public sector ocean-going and inland vessel-repairing establishment at Patenga could further contribute significantly to the national economy.
The CDDL, a subsidiary of Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) under the Ministry of Industry, has long been engaged in ship repairing and servicing in the country.
Later talking to newsmen, Geeteara Safiya Chowdhury assured that all possible steps would be taken as per the laws to further strengthen the physical capacity of the CDDL.
Industries Secretary Nurul Amin, BSEC Chairman Zafarullah and BCIC Chairman Mohammad Mokhlesur Rahman were present at the briefing.
Earlier, CDDL General Manager Enamul Baki said a separate dock fully-equipped with supplementary facilities should be set up here.
