2 elections on Mar 23

The 4th phase of the Upazila elections will be held in 92 Upazilas on March 23 along with by-election to the Tangail 8 constituency. Schedule for the 4th phase of elections has been announced by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad. An EC circular said the by-poll to the Tangail 8 constituency, which fell vacant because of the death of Shaukat Momen Shahjahan, will be held on Mar 23. At a press conference at the EC's media centre, the CEC said that the commission plans to hold the 4th phase elections to 92 Upazilas in 42 districts across the country the same day. According to the schedule, the last day for submitting nominations is February 23 and March 6 for withdrawing them. The first phase of the local government polls will be held in 98 Upazilas on Feb 19, second phase in 117 Upazilas on Feb 27 and third phase in 83 Upazilas on Mar 15. The EC plans to hold elections in the remaining Upazilas in two more phases. Awami League lawmaker Shaukat Momen Shahjahan, elected in the Jan 5 elections from Tangail 8, died of cardiac failure on Jan 20, according to a news agency.
