2 ex-Jamaat MPs among 13 put on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court on Monday placed 13 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its associate student body Islami Chhatra Shibir, including two former Jamaat MPs, on a three-day remand each in a case filed under the Explosive Substance Act. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Lutfus Rahman Shishir passed the order when DB inspector Mahfuzur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court, seeking a 10-day remand for each.
However, their lawyers filed separate petitions for their bail before the court. The court also asked the IO to complete their interrogation within seven days. Earlier, 13 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, including two former Jamaat MPs Mia Golam Parwar of Khulna-5 constituency and Mujibur Rahman of Rajshahi, were arrested from a secret meeting in the city’s Mirpur area on Monday.
Police also recovered 20 crude bombs, huge sticks and Islamic books from their possessions. Officer-in-charge of the Pallabi Police Station Dadon Fakir said two cases were filed in this connection under Explosive Substance Act and Special Act on Monday night. Talking to the reporters at a press briefing at DMP media centre on Tuesday, Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said the Jamaat-Shibir leaders have reportedly confessed to planning to carry out subversive activities in the readymade garment (RMG) sector ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, according to a news agency.
