The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) is set to press charges against 11 individuals, including two former lawmakers and the Chairman of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), in seven graft cases, reports UNB.
ACC director general (admin) Col Hanif Iqbal told the Commission's regular briefing Monday that the anti-graft watchdog has approved the submission of charge sheets in the seven cases.
Former MP from Netrakona-1 Dr Abdul Karim Abbasi and two others will be charge-sheeted in the case filed by the ACC for acquiring unearned wealth worth Tk 5.7 million (57 lakh) and concealment of information about that.
The ACC will press charges against another former Netrakona MP Dr Mohammad Ali for having ill-gotten wealth worth Tk 0.56 million (5.68 lakh) and hiding information, while his wife Rabeya Khatun, principal of a private college, will be charge-sheeted in a separate case for illegally acquiring wealth worth Tk 3.96 million (39.67 lakh).
BIWTA chairman Dr Reaz Hasan Khandaker will be charge-sheeted for taking Tk 0.7 million (7.0 lakh) in bribe.
The charge sheets in three other graft cases would be submitted against five individuals for misappropriation of money and bribery. The accused include a banker, a land official and a Titas Gas employee.
Col Hanif told the briefing that a 'trap case' was filed in Feni Thursday against customs inspector GM Shahjahan and customs superintendent Golamur Rahman, both stationed in Feni, for taking Tk 60,000 in bribe from a businessman.
Shahjahan was caught red-handed while taking the bribe from Mohammad Selim. The other accused, Golamur, was with him at that time. A trap was laid by the ACC with the help of Selim to catch the duo red-handed.
Hanif said the ACC has so far forwarded 268 cases to the Truth and Accountability Commission (TAC) for considering clemency in return for ill-gotten wealth.
"Another 26 applications are pending with the Commission that would be sent on completion of the procedural work," he said adding that these applications were prepared on November 20, the last date for filing applications to TAC for clemency.
