2 more cases filed against info secy

Wednesday, 25 February 2009

Two more cases were filed against the fired information secretary ATM Fazlul Karim, both on sedition charges, for allegedly disparaging the country's slain founding father and his family, reports UNB.

The two cases came a day after he was sent on forced retirement following the filing of the first case Sunday on defamation charge when his allegorical writing created an outcry in the ruling-party rank and file.

Awami Bastuhara League's Central Committee member CS Alam and advocate Omar Faruq filed the two cases with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court accusing the dissident bureaucrat-poet, best known as Abu Karim, of committing sedition.

The complainants in their cases alleged that Abu Karim wrote some derogatory words in his book of poetry criticising Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members. The book, titled 'Baganey Phutey Achhey Ashonkhya Golap', was published for the Ekushey Book Fair 2008 during the caretaker regime and again hit bookstalls in the current fair. This time it was taken notice of and removed.

His (Abu Karim) literary works also defamed the country's independence and sacrifices of 3 million martyrs, the complainants contended, as the figurative satirical piece belittled the martyrs.

The criticism about Mujib and particularly his sons came to light when a vernacular Bangla daily published an excerpt from the book on February 20.
