Monday, 9 June 2014

Two more candidates have backed off from Narayanganj-5 by-election. Monday's development leaves four men in the fray. District Election Officer Tarifuzzaman said renegade Awami League (AL) candidate Anowar Hossain and Krishak Sramik Janata League aspirant Iqbal Siddiqi withdrew their nominations on the last day. Hossain, also the ruling party's metropolitan unit chief, announced his withdrawal at a press conference on Sunday. Iqbal Siddiqi pulled out from the race yesterday, the last day for withdrawing candidature. The constituency fell vacant after the death of Jatiya Party (JP) MP Nasim Osman, brother of N'ganj-4 MP AKM Shamim Osman. The AL has decided not to join the fray, effectively leaving it open for opposition JP, which is also part of the government. The JP has nominated Nasim and Shamim Osman's younger brother AKM Selim Osman to contest the June 26 balloting, according to bdnews24.com.
