2 OU centres inoperative in Nilphamari dist

NILPHAMARI, Jan 22: Open University centres did not increase in number as expected in Nilphamari district. To provide education facilities to the dropout students and others irrespective of age limit, Open University education programme is going on in Nilphamri district as elsewhere in the country although only in few locations.
Out of six upazilas of the district there are four S.S.C centres in four upazilas out of which Rabiya Bidya Niketon in Nilphamari sadar upazila, Dimla High School centre in Dimla Upazila, Mubarak Hossain High School centre in Jaldhaka Upazila and Gomnati High School centre in Domal upazila. Two S.S.C open university centres have been closed due to dearth of required students. They are one centre in Kishorganj upazila and the other in Domar upazila. In the ongoing four S.S.C centres there are 403 students.
In B.A, B.S.S course there are only two centres in the district attached with Moshiur Rahman Degree College in sadar upazila and Jandhaka Rabiya Chowdhury Women's College in Jaldhaka upazila. There are 353 students in these two centres.
When contacted coordinating officer of Nilphamari sub-regional office of open university Dewan Sirajul Islam said due to non-availability of students two centres were closed. He also mentioned that it requires a minimum of 50 students to operate a centre which are attached either with a high school or a college.
