2 remanded for Raja murder, 1 sent to jail

A Dhaka court has placed two people, accused of killing Raja, on three-day police remand for questioning. Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Arefin has passed the order. Court sources said another accused in the murder case has confessed to beating teenage boy Raja to death on Monday in Ganaktuli in Hazaribagh. The court sent him to jail. Earlier, police produced the three accused before the counrt of Magistrate Shamsul Arefin seeking 7-day remand for each. The court granted 3-day remand for the two accused. The three people were arrested for their alleged involvement in torturing Raja to death over suspicion that the boy stole a mobile phone.
On Tuesday, another accused in the murder case, Arju was killed in a ‘shootout’ between Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel and his associates in Hazaribagh in Old Dhaka. RAB arrested Arju, the former president of Hazaribagh thana unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and prime accused in the case, on Tuesday and he died in the ‘gun battle’ the same day. Arju and his associates allegedly beat Raja to death on August 17 on allegation of stealing mobile phone. Raja’s sister Reshma Akhter Shabana filed a case with Hazaribagh Police Station against 14, including the ex-BCL leader, as the main accused, according to a news agency.
