The oil-carrying freight train jumped the tracks in Fouzdarhat in Chittagong’s Sitakunda Upazila because the driver entered the mail line ignoring the signal, Railway officials say. Uttam Kumar Bhattacharya, loco master of the freight train, and his assistant Bidar Ali were suspended on charges of negligence, they said. The train was on its way to the Peaking Power Plant in Dohazari. The accident took place around 6:00am on Wednesday when the loco master entered the railway tracks of mail trains ignoring signal, according to the Railway officials. Rail links between Chittagong and the rest of Bangladesh remained cut off for 7 hours due to the mishap. Chittagong Rail Station Manager Md Abul Kalam Azad said five wagons and the freight train’s engine derailed, blocking two tracks. Four wagons turned upside down. Bangladesh Railway East Zone Chief Engineer Abdul Hye said ‘We’re primarily suspecting that the accident took place as the driver entered the line ignoring signal,’ according to bdnews24.com.
