2 unauthorised shipyards evicted

Monday, 24 February 2014

Authorities on Monday evicted two illegal shipyards, built by destroying coastal forests, at Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong district. Talking to UNB, deputy commissioner (land) Abdullah Al Mamun said they removed the illegal establishments as per a Supreme Court order that came in response to a plea by the Forest Department. He said the two shipyards -- SK Steel and SK Ship Breaker -- were built illegally on lands under coastal forests in the upazila. Forest officer SM Monirul Islam said M Nazim Uddin built the two shipyards on about 14 acres of land in the coastal forest.
