20 BNP men detained on second day of hartal

CHITTAGONG, Apr 23: Police arrested around 20 activists and leaders of the main opposition BNP during today's dawn to dusk hartal.
The arrestees included Monowara Begum Moni, ward councillor of Chittagong City Corporation, municipal mayor of Raozan Abdullah al Ahsan and joint secretary of BNP women's unit Jesmine Khanam.
Monowara Begum and Jesmine were arrested while obstructing traffic and vandalizing vehicles at the Chittagong WASA intersection at 9.30 am while Ahsan was arrested from Raozan for instigating his workers in damaging vehicles plying on the Chittagong-Kaptai Road at around 10.15 am.
Eight others were detained from different parts in the city and nine from Raozan area of the district, police said.
Meanwhile, lax hartal was observed as vehicles of all types plied on the city streets from 9.00 in the morning on the second day of shut down enforced by the opposition BNP.
Activities in the maritime port and airport were normal. Delivery of cargo from Chittagong Port remained suspended until noon but resumed fully at around 2.30 pm when trucks, vans and other public carriers started entering the jetties for transportation of cargo.
Long range inter-district buses remained stranded the terminals until 4.00 pm. All inter-city railway trains left Chittagong Station on schedule, station manager Shamsul Alam said.
Our Rajshahi correspondent adds: The second day of hartal initiated by BNP in protest against disappearance of BNP leader Ilias Ali was observed in Rajshahi amid clashes between police and pro-hartal activists on Monday.
In the morning, a pro-hartal procession led by BNP Joint Secretary General Mijanur Rahman Minu was taken out from Ambagan area of the city. When the procession reached near Bornali crossing, police intercepted it and charged batons on the processionists. At least 15 pro-hartal activists including Mijnaur Rahman Minu was slightly injured in police attack. Being attacked by police, processionists dispersed and started to attack police with brickbats from safe distance when police lobbed several rounds of tear gas canisters to disperse them.
Ataur Rahman, a police constable was wounded by brickbats.
Meanwhile police this noon dispersed another pro-hartal procession led by BNP Rajshahi district President Nadim Mostafa with baton charge and lobbing of tear gas canisters at Shaheb Bazar area.
BNP processionists took out the procession from Moni Chattar area of Shaheb Bazar and was proceeding towards zero point at around 12-45 pm when police charged batons and lobbed tear gas canisters towards them. At least 15 processionists including Nadim Mostafa were injured in police action.
