20 businesses, individuals receive MCCI Centenary Awards

The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI) has awarded 20 businesses and individuals to recognise their valuable contributions to the economy.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith formally handed over the awards to the winners Saturday at a ceremony at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka on the occasion of the 110th founding anniversary of the country's prestigious chamber body.
The enterprises that received the awards included: Transcom and ACI for practicing corporate good governance and improving business environment, Pran-RFL Group and Apex Footwear for entrepreneurship development, Unilever Bangladesh and British American Tobacco Bangladesh for corporate social responsibility, AK Khan & Co for skills development, MM Ispahani for education, Grameen Bank and Brac for poverty alleviation and social development, Rahimafrooz Renewable Energy and Viyellatex Group for green business, BASIS and Bangladesh Computer Society for ICT development, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute for food security through research and development in agriculture and Channel i for promoting agriculture through electronic media.
In individual category Late M Noorul Quader, founder of Desh Garment, received the best award for pioneering industrialisation. Barrister Rafique-ul-Huq and BIRDEM received the award for their contribution in health and hygiene.
The MCCI arranged the award ceremony as part of its founding-anniversary at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre which was attended by a large number of professionals, businesspeople, politicians, members of civil society and distinguished personalities also attended the meeting.
Former Indian President and eminent scientist APJ Abdul Kalam attended the two-day celebration programme as the special guest.
