Seven injured in AL factional clash in Magura, 50 houses vandalised

At least 20 people were injured in a fighting between two factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Barguna unit during a National Mourning Day discussion Monday, reports UNB
The incident took place around 11:00 am on Barguna Shilpakala Academy premises when district BCL President Rezaul Kabir Reza, General Secretary Taushikur Rahman Imran, Senior Vice-President Sabuj Mollah and Central BCL Member Rishat Hassan Prince and their followers came to attend the programme.
The groups got into a scuffle following a heated argument during the discussion.
At one stage, they started hurling brick chips at each other and vandalised a police vehicle, SM Tariqul Islam, additional superintendent of Barguna police, said. "Later police had to use batons to bring the situation under control."
"Two BCL activists were held from the spot, and several of them suffered injuries. Also, four sharp weapons were recovered from a room of Barguna Launch Terminal," Tariqul added.
Since July 24, after the new committee of the Barguna BCL was announced, there have been sporadic clashes between BCL activists and leaders who were included in and excluded from it.
Meanwhile, at least seven people sustained injuries in a clash between two factions of the ruling Awami League (AL) in Sreepur upazila of Magura district on Monday morning.
The identities of the injured could not be known immediately.
On Sunday night, some miscreants burnt down two houses and vandalised more than fifty houses in Khoddarhua village of Srikol union, said Shukdev Roy, officer-in-charge of Sreepur thana.
Locals said Joint General Secretary of upazila unit of Awami League Kazi Tariqul Islam and Organisational Secretary of of the unit Mostasim Billah Sangram had long been at loggerheads in the area. Both the groups blamed each other over the incident.
As a sequel to the enmity, supporters of Tariqul and Sangram locked into an altercation on Monday morning.
The altercation turned violent when both the groups attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving 7 people injured, added the OC.
Police have so far arrested 15 people in this connection, the officer said.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said the OC adding that a case was filed with Sreepur thana in connection with the violence.
"Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to ward off further trouble," he added.
