20 injured as bus plunges into ditch

A bus overturned and plunged into roadside ditch injuring 20 passengers in Burimari upazila in Lalmonirhat district on Friday. Police, locals and witnesses said the accident occurred on the Burimari-Hatibandha Highway in front of the Fakirtari Union Council (Parishad) office. Inspector Ibrahim Mia, In-charge of Hatibandha Highway Police outpost, said: “A Lalmonirhat-bound speeding bus from Patgram Bus Stand overturned and fell into a ditch beside the highway around 11am after its driver lost control over the steering,” he said. “At least 20 passengers were injured,” he added. Among the injured, Faruk, 35, his wife and son, Samiron, 30, Anjum Ara, 32, Bappi, 28, Mitu, 22, Shirin, 17, and Hamida, 17, were admitted to Patgarm and Hatibandha health complexes. The were released from the two local hospitals after receiving first aid, according to a news agency.
