At least 20 people were injured in a triangular clash during the hartal in the city's Shahbag area Sunday morning.
Eyewitnesses said the clash took place between the leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) employees.
The police arrested BNP's Student Affairs Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, JCD leaders Nasir Uddin, Golam Kibria Shimul, Mohidul Islam Hiron, Saleh Ahmed, Munni Chowdhury Medha, Farhadul Islam and Rubel in this connection.
Annie, JCD central Vice-President Haider Ali Lenin, DU unit Joint Convener Mohidul Islam Hiron, Eden College leaders Popi, Munni Chowdhury Medha and JCD activists Anwar Hossain, Belal, Masum Billah, Firoz, Saleh, Javed and Sumon were injured during the clash.
Five hospital employees were also injured. All of the injured were rushed to BSMMU.
Sources said JCD activists were trying to enter into the DU campus in the early morning through the Shahbag area. But BCL workers who were previously gathering in the area obstructed them and also chased them throwing brickbats.
At one stage, both the sides became locked in chase and counter-chase and the police started baton-charging on the students leaving 15 JCD leaders and activists injured.
Following the police action, JCD men took shelter on the PG Hospital premises but a good number of employees of the hospital drove them away. JCD workers, at that time, became locked in clash with the employees.
Later, BCL leaders and activists staged demonstrations at different spots of the campus.
At about 10am, they held a rally in front of the Fine Arts Faculty where leaders of the BCL said BNP and JCD are trying to create unrest in the country. But their plan would not be successful, they said.
They also said that the Chhatra League would never yield to any anti-state elements. BNP should therefore give up all kinds of conspiracies against the country and the present government, the BCL leaders added.
BCL president Mahmud Hasan Ripon, General Secretary Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton and others spoke on the occasion.
