200 pourasabhas’ people against upgradation into municipality

People of at least 200 pourasabhas of the country, out of a total of 331, are against upgrading their areas into municipalities, reports BSS.
LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said this in Parliament during question-answer session Monday.
"People of those pourasabhas, which were upgraded from Union Parishad areas during past BNP-Jamaat led alliance government, have applied to the local government ministry expressing their views against making their area municipality," the minister said.
Criticising the BNP-Jamaat led government for upgrading many Union Parishads (UP) to pourasabhas, he said it was done violating all rules and principles.
"Many UPs where about 90 per cent land are arable, have been made pourasabhas," the LGRD minister said adding people of those pourasabhas are now burdened with municipality taxes.
As the pourasabhas have no own income, it now became difficult to take development projects for those municipalities, Syed Ashraf said.
He said the government, however, is not considering for downgrading the pourasabhas, rather trying to generate sources of income.
Replying to a question from BNP lawmaker Mahbub Uddin Khokan, the LGRD minister said the government regularly gives 'block allocations' for municipalities for their development.
At this moment, he said the government has no plans to give any special allocation for Members of Parliament (MPs) to take development projects in pourasabhas.
