Thursday, 13 February 2014

At least 200 workers fell sick after taking snacks distributed by the authorities at a readymade garment (RMG) factory in Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur on Wednesday night. The sick workers of Karim Textiles, an RMG unit located at Mouchak-Nurbagh in the upazila, were admitted to Gazipur Sadar Hospital and other hospitals and clinics at Mouchak and Konabari in the district. Sources said each worker was supplied a patty and an egg around 8:00pm as night snacks. Shortly after intake of the snacks, the workers started vomiting. Doctors at the hospitals said the workers fell sick owing to food poisoning. Their conditions deteriorated fast soon after taking the intoxicated food. However, their condition started to improve gradually following treatment at the hospitals and the clinics. Production activities at Karim Textiles were suspended for several hours after the incident which sent a panic wave in other factories situated in the area. The district administration has formed a three-member committee to ascertain the actual cause of the incident, according to UNB.
