At least 200 shanties and 25 flats were gutted in a devastating fire that broke out at South Begunbari in the city's Tejgaon Industrial area Friday evening, police said.
Shilpanchal (industrial) police said the fire originated from a gas pipeline leakage at Dipikar Moarh of South Begunbari at about 6:15pm on the ground floor of a five-storied building owned by one Salman and soon spread to the adjacent slum burning down at least 200 shanties into ashes.
The fire also damaged 25 residential apartments.
On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and laboured hard to drench the flame.
