20,000 people marooned as flashflood hits Bandarban

Around 20,000 people have been marooned in seven upazilas of Bandarban district due to flashflood triggered by incessant rain for the last three days since Tuesday, reports UNB.
Officer-in-charge of Bandarban sadar thana Md Imtiaj Ahmed said the flashflood has affected around 300 families of the municipality area.
"The people who had been living at foothills amid risk have been evacuated. In some areas, incidents of landslide have occurred but no casualty has been reported," he said.
The OC said Lama, Thanchi and Ramu bazar have gone under 5-8 feet water. Besides, Islampur and Hafejghona of the municipality area and low-lying areas of Madhyampara, Ujanipara, Keuchingghata adjacent to the Sangu River have been flooded.
District administration and municipality authorities have opened six shelter centres for the flood-hit people.
Water levels were on the rise in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers, he added.
General Secretary of Bandarban Bus Owners' Association Jhantu Dash said road communications between the district and other parts of the country remained suspended since Wednesday noon as many roads have under water.
Meanwhile, incessant rains since Wednesday night inundated major parts of Barisal city, disrupting normal life and snapping road communication in some areas.
Sadar Road, Battala, Bogra Road, Daptarkhana, Stadium Colony, Polashpur and Rasulpur have gone under water.
Barisal Met office recorded 208 mm of rainfall in the city in 24 hours till 9:00am Thursday.
