2020-2049mmcf of gas being extracted per day: Minister

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammad Enamul Haque Sunday said the present government has been implementing short, mid and long-term programmes to raise the country's gas production considering growing demand of the natural resources, reports BSS.
Replying to a question from independent lawmaker Mohammad Fazlul Azaim, he told the House that some 2020-2049 million cubic feet of gas is being extracted per day from different gas fields across the country.
Besides, he said, works for exploring gas have been going on in full-swing aiming at raising the country's gas stock keeping in mind its growing future demand in the country.
In this connection, he said the activities of Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) is being strengthened with rig and modern seismic equipments to this end.
Responding to another question raised by treasury bench member Md Tajul Islam, the State Minister informed the House that a total of eight gas structures have been discovered in the country after assumption of office by the present government in power.
This gas structures are: Sundalpur, Sunetra, Rupganj, Bajitpur, Madan, Khaliajhuri, Kapasia and Mobarakpur.
"We hope that 10 million cubic feet gas will be extracted from Sundalpur structure per day," he said adding that there is immense possibility of getting more gas from other new structures.
Replying to another question of Afaz Uddin Ahmed, he told the Jatiya Sangsad that the work of the project to distribute gas in the country's south-western region is underway. Under the project gas would be provided in Kushtia, Jhenidah, Jessore, Khulna and Bagerhat districts, he added.
