2061 Bangladeshis languishing in foreign jails, JS told

As many as 2061 Bangladeshis have been languishing in jails in different countries across the world, Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni told the House Saturday, reports BSS.
Replying to a question from BNP lawmaker Nazim Uddin Ahmed, the minister said according to the foreign ministry, the highest 1,046 Bangladeshis have been languishing in jails in Saudi Arabia, followed by 189 persons in India, 188 in the UK, 180 in Singapore and 161 in Oman.
Besides, she said, 76 Bangladeshis have been languishing in Myanmar, 49 in Lebanon, 23 in Turkey, 12 in Bahrain, two in Brunei, 23 in Algeria, 24 in Cyprus, 43 in Iran, seven in Japan, 19 in Jordan, one in Syria, three in Azerbaijan, seven in Egypt and eight in China.
Responding to another question from Treasury Bench member Abdur Rahman Badi, the foreign minister said 95 per cent of Rohinga refugees were repatriated from Bangladesh and the efforts are on to repatriate the rest of the Rohinga refugees.
She said a total of 2,36,495 Rohinga refugees were repatriated from 1992 to 2005, but no refugees were repatriated since 2005.
"The issue was discussed with importance during my visit to Myanamar in May last year and later at foreign-secretary level meeting in Dhaka, while the Yangoon has agreed in principle to take back rest of its refugees from Bangladesh," Dipu Moni said.
