22 people injured in clashes over UP poll in Bagerhat

BAGERHAT, Mar 22 (UNB) : At least 22 people were injured in clashes between two groups over union parishad election at Talbunia of Rampal Upazila and Tafalbari Bazar of Sharankhola Upazila Monday.
In Bashtali Union, police and locals said supporters of Maulana Rezaul Karim and Sheikh Abu Sayeed of chairman candidates were engaged in the clash during election campaign Monday evening.
Later, the supporters of the two groups equipped with sticks and brick- bats attacked each other, leaving 12 people injured.
Of the seriously injured, Maulana Alauddin, Saidul Islam, Badsha Alam, Maulana Selim, Qutubuddin and three others were admitted to Jhanjhania Hospital.
In Southkhali Union, supporters of Anowar and Mojmmel Hossain of chairman candidates clashed with each other during the election campaign, leaving 10 people injured from both sides.
Of the seriously injured, Rubel Khan, Nasir, Rubel Haulader, Muhim Haulader and Jakir Mir were admitted to Sharankhola Hospital.
Rampal Thana OC Shahidul Islam Shahin and Sharankhola Thana OC Azizul Haque said police rushed to the scene and controlled the situation.
The local administration deployed additional police at the troubled spot. No case was filed.
