2.2m animals sacrificed in Rajshahi division, 0.95m in Khulna

RAJSHAHI, July 02 (BSS): In line with the previous couple of years, hundred per cent domestic animals were sacrificed everywhere in Rajshahi division during this year's Eid.
In the holy Eid-ul-Adha, around 2.21 million (22.14 lakh) animals, most of those are goats, were sacrificed in all eight districts under the Rajshahi division.
The people sacrificed 0.71 million cattle heads, 9,469 buffaloes, 1.23 million goats and 181,000 lakh lambs.
Dr Nazrul Islam, Divisional Director of the Department of Livestock Services, said the farmers earned around Tk 340.00 billion after selling their domestic sacrificial animals.
Dr Islam said the region produces enormous domestic animals as the government provides incentives for boosting production.
Local animal husbandry sector has marked a revolutionary boost in recent years following massive steps taken by the government and different development organisations.
Both rural and urban areas, the poor and marginalised people including women have achieved tremendous successes in the sector getting various assistance from the government and development partners.
Artificial insemination of cows is gaining popularity in the region following significant achievement in improving the breeding system.
Due to the cross breeding, the cows are giving milk 10 times more than the previous record.
Dr Nazrul Islam said the producers have adopted new and improved practices and technologies in bull rearing and fattening contributing to enhanced production and productivity.
The size of the market had expanded due to the growing active role of large and small-scale private companies.


Ramzan Ali, 48, a marginal farmer of Subhadanga area under Bagmara Upazila said, the cattle markets had witnessed plenty of supply of locally reared sacrificial animals following a remarkable boost in the local animal husbandry sector in recent years.
The buyers also preferred locally reared healthier and hygienic cattle-heads as sacrificial animals.
BSS from Khulna adds: Around 950,000 cattle have been sacrificed in Khulna division this year.
Acting Director of Khulna Divisional Livestock Department Dr. Md. Lutfor Rahman said a total of 9,49,581 heads of cattle were sacrificed in 10 districts of the division during Eid-ul-Azha.
Of the sacrificed animals, 2,70,219 were cows, 1,492 were buffaloes, 6, 52,731 were goats, 25,123 were sheep and 16 were other sacrificial animals.
In Khulna metropolis and district, a total of 1,05,783 heads of cattle were sacrificed.
Besides, 1,03,930 animals were sacrificed in Bagerhat, 1,02,139 in Satkhira, 99,219 in Jashore, 1,27,911 in Jhenidah, 36,238 in Magura, 41,828 in Narail, 1,32,606 in Kushtia, 1,06,216 in Chuadanga and 93,711 in Meherpur in the division.
Sanjida Begum, chief revenue officer of KCC, said a total of 6,020 heads of cattle worth Tk 437.3 million were sold at the KCC's Zoragate cattle market in the city.
"KCC earned over Tk 21.9 million from the selling over the 6,020 sacrificial animals this year while the revenue collected by KCC was Tk 22.6 million last year," she said.
