24 suspected JMB, Sarbahara men arrested in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Apr 9 (UNB): Twenty-four suspected cadres of outlawed Sarbahara group and Islamic militant Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were arrested in a special crackdown on them in Bagmara Upazila early Thursday.
Police said a "listed Sarbahara cadre" and a JMB man were among the arrested persons.
Bagmara thana OC Shahabuddin Khalifa said police arrested them conducting an overnight operation against Sarbahara and JMB extremists as the two leftist and rightist groups got going again "through regrouping gradually" in the area.
"There were cases against the arrested persons in the past," police said, adding that they were being interrogated.
The arrested suspects are Abdur Razzak, 36, son of Late Kalimuddin, Abdul Jabbar, son of Late Bhuli Pramanik and Amzad Hossain of Hamirkutsha area, Abdul Jalil, son of Abdul Karim of Talgharia village, Shafiqul Islam, son of Akbar Ali of Kalapara village, Rajequl Islam Rocket, son of Bayenuddin and Hafizur Rahman of Teghadi Senopara village, Afsar Ali, 50, son of Hashem Ali of Balia village, Meser Ali, 40, son of Late Teser Ali of Shitlai village, Abdul Ahad of Kathalbari, Moazzem Hossain of Shakoa village, Uzzal Hossain, son of Azizul Haq and Shahjahan of Bhatkhali village, Fazle Haq alias Farid, 48, and Yad Ali, of Nakhopara village, Abul Hossain of Baranaihati, Shamsul Haq of Koalipara village, Rafiqul Islam, 40, of Kalupara village, Sazzad Ali, 26, son of Moksed of Goalkandi village, Taibur Rahman, 19, Habibur Rahman, 60, Abdur Rauf, son of Anisur Rahman of Baje Goalkandi village, Dilbar Ali of Koalipara village and Abul Hossain and Moslem Ali, both 45, of Khanpukur village in Durgapur Upazila.
Besides, police also arrested two persons with weapons in Durgapur Upazila. They are Abdul Mannan, 28, son of Abu Taher, and Rahidul Islam, 26, of Singa village.
The special drive was launched Wednesday night as "law-and-order situation might deteriorate due to increase in terrorist activities", police sources said.
Bagmara once was a stronghold of Sarbahara and JMB militants wherein the then JMB leader Bangla Bhai, later executed, had carried out a violent vigilant drive to root out the outlaws in 2004.
