25 hurt in Barisal cops-students clash

The agitating students of the Institute of Health and Technology (IHT), Barisal, engaged in a clash with police in Barisal city on Wednesday. At least 25 people were injured in the clash. Police arrested 14 students. The students blocked the road near Barisal Medical College Hospital (BMCH) creating traffic congestion. Campus sources said the students had been staging demonstration blocking the road near the BMCH to press for their various demands since Wednesday morning. Their demands include the formation of a Bangladesh Diploma Medical Education Board to replace the Paramedical Education Board, the creation of new posts in line with the WHO guidelines, eradication of legal complexities in job appointments, 2nd grade status for diploma medical technologists and pharmacists and starting of BSc and MSc courses. At one stage, the agitating students hurled brick chips at vehicles and police. The law enforcers retaliated by charged batons. A chase and counter chase ensued leaving 25 including cops injured. Police picked up 14 students from the spot, according to a news agency.
