254,537 Bangladeshis tune to world record

The Guinness World Record has recognised the attempt made on March 26 by more than 0.25 million Bangladeshis for singing the national anthem by the largest number of people together. Tens of thousands of people thronged the thoroughfares of Dhaka to the National Parade Square at Tejgaon in the morning of March 26 to sing together the national anthem on the occasion of the 44th Independence and National Day of Bangladesh. Among them, 254,537 sang in a chorus ‘Amar Sonar Bangla Ami Tomai Bhalo Basi’ in a bid to make it to the Guinness Book of world records. They aimed to make history, set a new official world record for the largest population, to sing the national anthem together. People from all walks of life, including Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina, all ministers and high officials of government and armed forces, students, teachers, doctors, professionals, housewives, garment workers and labourers tuned the national anthem together at the National Parade Ground. All merged with red and green holding replica of national flag on hands, congregated there for “Lakho Konthe Sonar Bangla” to sing “Amar Sonar Bangla” in a chorus to make history, set a new official world record for the largest population, to sing the national anthem simultaneously. Hardly two weeks after the event, the Guinness World Record said on its website that the most people singing a national anthem simultaneously is 254,537 and was achieved by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh (Bangladesh) in Dhaka on Mar 26 2014, according to a news agency.
