Bangladesh has a demand for 500,000 bags of blood where as only 26 per cent of it comes from voluntary donation, said Prof Din Mohammad, head of Neurology department of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
He said, "The rest of the total blood is collected from friends, relatives and professional donors but most of these people are not interested in getting their blood screened; transfusion of such blood is very risky."
"Various things and methods have been innovated in the world but blood has found no substitute until now; and to inspire people in blood donation, we have to start awareness drives," he said as a special guest at a reception programme to honour 314 blood donors organised by Quantum Foundation at the National Press Club on Friday.
14 blood donors, who donated 25 times, got golden crests and certificates and 300 blood donors, who donated 10 times, got silver medals and certificates.
Founder of Transpa rency International of Bangladesh Chapter, Prof Muzaffer Ahmed said, "Selfless donation is a great virtue and saving life by donating blood is the best way. Young generation should be inspired to donate blood as we have huge lack against demand."
