27 million people now using cell phone

The total number of cellular phone users reached 27.72 million until June last with a growth rate of more than 6.5 per cent over the past three months.
According to the latest data of the Bangladesh Telecommu-nication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the number of cell phone users was 25.08 million in April last.
Until June, the number reached 27.72 million with cell phone tele-density increasing by 19.83 per cent, said the BTRC.
The number of GrameenPhone subscribers stood at 13.97 million until June compared with 12.59 million in April.
Aktel lost nearly 0.49 million of its subscribers as the number of Aktel users came down at 5.05 million in June from 5.49 million in April.
It also lost its second position to Banglalink that added 1.02 million users to its users' base of 5.02 million in April. The number of Banglalink users until June was recorded at 6.04 million.
The number of CityCell users was 1.30 million until June from 1.17 in April while the number of Teletalk users rose to 0.89 million from 0.81 million during the same period.
The user-base of Warid Telecom, the newcomer in the business, expanded to 0.47 million subscribers in just two months (May-June) of its operation, according to the BTRC data.
