2nd day drive against jaywalking on

The 2nd-day mobile court drive against jaywalking in the city is underway today (Wednesday). Sources at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said 40 pedestrians have been fined in the 1st 2-hour for jaywalking since 10:00am on Wednesday. The DMP says it is conducting the mobile drive in 4 important points - Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Banglamotor and Ruposhi Bangla Hotel (Shahbagh) - of the city from 10am and realising fine from each errant pedestrian. Additional police personnel were deployed from Shahbagh's Ruposhi Bangla Hotel to Farmgate area to identify and fine the jaywalkers. On Tuesday, DMP in its mobile court drive against jaywalking in the capital fined several hundred pedestrians Tk 50-200 each for violating rules while crossing roads. Before launching the special court drive on Tuesday, the DMP had run a 3-day awareness campaign through the media against jaywalking. The traffic rules stipulate, one can be sentenced to maximum 6-month imprisonment or Tk 200 for not using foot-overbridges and underpass or crossing the streets sporadically, according to a news agency.
