3 BMA leaders face music, woman fined Tk 50,000

CHITTAGONG, June 14: Three government officials have been charged with the election code breaching while CDA chairman has been asked to appear before the election commission (EC) on June 20 for allegedly participating in the campaign for the ruling party backed mayoral candidate.
In the city today a mobile court fined a woman Tk 50,000 for breach of election rules by distributing objectionable leaflets against Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
An official in the Chittagong district election office said that the election commission filed cases against three executives of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and Swadhinata Chikitshok Parishad.
They are Dr Sheikh Shafiul Azam, Dr Mujibul Huq Khan and Dr Nasiruddin Mahmud. EC officials said cases will be filed against them as they have breached the election code. Their names have been published in an advertisement in a local newspaper in favour of mayoral candidate Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
“We sent a letter on June 12 informing the EC that they have violated the election code as they are government officials. We have learnt that cases will be filed against them but we are yet to receive any formal directives in this regard,” an official in the Chittagong election office told the FE this evening.
The name of another BMA leader Dr Md Sharif has also been published in another advertisement, sources said.
Sources confirmed that chairman of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) Abdus Salam has been asked to appear before the EC on June 20 for his participation in the election campaign.
