3 cops, 2 robbers hurt in \\\'gun battle\\\'

Two alleged robbers, arrested in Dhaka in connection with the robbery attempt in two local jewelry shops, were injured in a ‘gunfight’ between police and their cohorts in Chittagong on Wednesday. The injured are M Hasan Jamadar, 32, and M Manik alias Kana Manik, 28. They were arrested from Dhaka city on December 14 for their involvement in the robbery. A sub-inspector and two constables were also injured in the gun battle, police said. Officer-in-charge of Chittagong’s Kotwali Police Station Mahiuddin Selim said a police team along with Hasan and Manik went to Firingibazar Bridgeghat area to recover firearms. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, their accomplices opened fire on them, forcing police to fire back. Hasan and Manik received bullet injuries during the gunfight that also left three cops injured. A revolver, a gun, three bullets and five cartridges were recovered from the spot. Earlier, in an overnight drive on Tuesday, police arrested 7 more people, including four women, in connection with the incident, according to a news agency.
