3 CWASA officials get 15 years for corruption

Three officials of Chittagong WASA (CWASA) and a contractor were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by a Chittagong court Sunday in a corruption case. Divisional Special Judge SM Solaiman, after examining records and prosecution witnesses, awarded them the 15 years jail-term under three sections of CrPC - five years each under every section. The convicts - WASA superintending engineer M Shafiullah, assistant engineer Abdul Quddus and assistant engineer (retd) Kazi Abu Taher along with contractor AN Faruk Ahmed - were also fined Tk 4,25,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more in jail. Of the convicts, Abdul Quddus and Shafiullah are on the run. The court also ordered attachment of all of their moveable and immovable property to the national exchequer. — UNB
