Wednesday, 6 August 2014

Three persons have been sentenced to life imprisonment for throwing acid on a woman in Netrokona. The Acid Prevention Tribunal Court-2’s Additional District Judge Md Abdul Hamid delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. They have also been fined Tk 50,000 each. They will spend an extra five years in jail if they fail to pay up. The three men are Abdul Wadud’s son 'Barek', 25, 'Siddik', 50, and Wadud’s first wife 'Rezia', 50. Siddik is currently absconding. ‘Abdul Wadud married Hazera Khatun, 30. After the marriage, his two wives were always at loggerheads. The convicted had earlier sent Wadud to jail in a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act because of the family feud,’ state prosecutor Md Saiful Alam Pradip said. ‘Later, they threw acid on Wadud’s second wife Hazera Khatun on October 30, causing facial deformity and blinding an eye.’ Following day, Hazera's younger sister Shahera Khatun filed a case at Netrokona Model Police Station, accusing the three, according to a news agency.
