Three activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal were arrested from two pro-hartal possessions in Shahbagh and Dhaka University campus areas on Monday morning. The JCD activists in the processions were chanting slogans in support of the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s ongoing nationwide 24-hour general strike called in protest against the 16th Amendment made to the Constitution empowering the Parliament to sack Supreme Court judges. Sources at Shahbagh Police Station and Dhaka University said two groups of JCD supporters took out separate processions from Shahbagh Intersection and DU Arts faculty area about 7am on Monday as part of the BNP and its student wing JCD’s programmes to enforce today’s hartal in the capital. Police obstructed the two street demonstrations and picked up three JCD activists from the processions, they added. The 20-party combine have been enforcing the nationwide daylong shutdown from 6:00am Monday right after the Jamaat-e-Islami’s 2-phase 48-hour hartal ended at dawn, according to private TV channels.
