3 killed in Sylhet lightning strikes

At least three people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strike in Goainghat and Zakiganj Upazilas of Sylhet district on Wednesday. The deceased were identified as Shahab Uddin, 18, son of Azir Uddin of Khalarchhari village, and Zarina Begum, 15, daughter of Kudrat Ullah of Lengura Haor village of Goainghat and Shahan, 12, a student of class V of Latifia Dakhil Madrasa and son of Haris Ali of Rarai village of Zakiganj. Witnesses said Shahab died on the spot when a thunderbolt struck him while working in the field in the afternoon. Another thunderbolt hit Jarina almost at the same time while she was returning home from outside. Fifteen sheep were also killed by lightning at Chitarai village of Goainghat upazila around 6pm on Wednesday. Police and witnesses said Shahan was struck by a thunderbolt while returning home from a playground at Rarai village in Zakiganj around 4:00pm, leaving him dead on the spot, according to UNB.
