Three policemen have been injured during a drive to arrest a leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir in Rajshahi city. Police said handmade bombs were lobbed at them during a scuffle with Shibir activists in a field near Rajshahi University (RU) on Sunday night. Motihar Police SI Masud Rana, Constables ‘Rakib’ and ‘Shahinoor’ were injured. Shibir, Jamaat-e-Islami’s student front, however claimed police shot and wounded six of their activists. Motihar Police OC Alamgir Hossain said they went to arrest Shibir leader Afzal Hossain Faisal around 11pm, at his house in Dharampur, next to ‘Biggyan Gabeshona’ field near RU. Afzal is sports secretary of Shibir’s committee at RU. ‘We went to arrest him after receiving a tip-off. But the Shibir men, hiding in the area, threw hand bombs when we got there.’ He said police lobbed tear gas shells and Shibir activists threw brickbats and attacked with sharp weapons. The clash continued for 20 minutes after which police arrested a badly injured Afzal who was carrying five hand bombs, said OC Hossain. Shahiduzzaman Babu, a local Shibir ‘cadre’, was also arrested, he said. Afzal has been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital. The injured policemen are being treated at Rajshahi Police Lines Hospital, according to bdnews24.com.
