3 RMG workers die in Gazipur road mishap

GAZIPUR, Jan 8 (UNB): A road accident in Borobari area of Sadar upazila on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway left three people killed and 17 others injured Sunday morning.
Vehicular movement remained suspended for an hour on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway following the accident, creating a long tailback on both sides of the highway.
The deceased were identified as Ismail (23), son of Abdul Qadir and worker of M I design garments, Jahangir (30), son of Hafiz Uddin and worker of Botom garments of Mymensingh and Ataur (35), son of Abbas Ali of Nilphamari and worker of Unique designer fashion garments.
Quoting witnesses, police said a Dhaka-bound Balaka Paribahan bus knocked down the garment workers while they were crossing the road, leaving Ataur dead on the spot and 17 others injured at around 8:15 am.
Two critically injured - Ismail and Jahangir - succumbed to their injuries at Tongi hospital.
Among the injured, five were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Pangu hospital while the other injured were taken to local hospitals and clinics.
Outranged by the accident, the fellow garment workers set fire to the bus soon after the accident and vandalised some passing vehicles. However, the bus driver and his helper managed to escape.
On information, fire fighters rushed to the spot and doused the fire after half an hour.
Transport movement returned to normalcy as police and RAB personnel brought the situation under control after one and half hours at around 10:00 am.
Police recovered the body and sent it to sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
