30 injured in Jamalpur clash over catching fish

JAMALPUR, Oct 16 (UNB): At least 30 people were injured during a clash between two groups of villagers over catching fish in Aralia Beel of Nurundi union in Sadar upazila on Saturday. Locals said the clash broke out Saturday morning when more than 100 farmers of the area were catching the fish in Aralia Beel. Supporters of Akbar Ali, an influential man of the area, attacked them. Later on, the two groups equipped with lethal weapons attacked each other, leaving at least 30 people injured during one hour clash. Of the seriously injured Abdul Latif, 48, Sufia Begum, 47 and Anwar Hossain, 28 were admitted to Jamalpur General Hospital while others to local clinics. Narundi police information centre in-charge Arifur Rahman said police rushed to the scene and controlled the situation. Narundi UP chairman Shajahan Ali said although Akbar Ali took lease of 40 acres of khas land, but he grabbed surrounding lands of poor farmers. For many years he has been cultivating fish over this land.
