Cases against Dr Yunus
301 lawyers' plea to end 'oppressive' measures
FE REPORT | Friday, 8 September 2023
As many as 301 lawyers have issued a statement, demanding an end to 'harassment and oppressive measures against Nobel laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus by the incumbent government'.
In the statement issued on Thursday, the Supreme Court lawyers said, "As the lawyers, we want the assurance of safety of all citizens of the country and fair application of laws."
"We, the lawyers of the constitutional court of Bangladesh, strongly condemn this fascist behaviour of the government," calling for an immediate cessation of all kinds of staged vindictive processes and withdrawal of all ongoing vexing cases against Dr Yunus.
SC lawyers Rezaul Karim Reza and M Mahbubur Rahman Khan issued the statement on behalf of all the signatories.
Former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) leaders and senior lawyers, including Zainul Abedin, Subrata Chowdhury, AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan, Ruhul Quddus Kazal, Dr Fariduzzaman Forhad, Syed Mamun Mahbub, Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Mohammad Shishir Manir and AKM Ehsanur Rahman, among others, signed the statement.
"We've realised with deep concern that the present government is taking various measures of oppression and harassment out of revenge against this great pioneer for conceptualising the mechanism
for uprooting hunger and poverty from society."
"The current government is trying to eliminate whoever it considers to be its opponent by using the state machinery," added the lawyers.
"Under the wrath of the current undemocratic government, many prominent people and politicians have either been sentenced or are in prison through dictating verdicts under the so-called judicial process in false and harassing cases."
"The ongoing judicial process by current illegitimate government against Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus is just slanted, stirred-up and outrageous," asserted the lawyers.
