3027 tonnes of turmeric yield in Magura this season

MAGURA, Feb 12: Turmeric growers of the district are expecting to make a profit of Tk 80 million this season following a bumper production.
A good number of farmers said turmeric farming is now a profitable venture. It can be cultivated along with another crop in the same land. Good demand and lucrative market price have encouraged the cultivators to grow the crop in more land.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, farmers brought 865 hectares of land under the farming of the item through the official target was 755 hectares. The total production has stood at 3027.5 tonnes.
Turmeric farmer Firoj Mridha of Belnagar village under Sadar upazila said the item is being sold at Tk 1,000 to Tk 1200 per maund in the local market. He said he has already made a profit of Tk 30,000 this season from his two bighas of land. He expressed hope to earn Tk 10,000 more this season.
Another grower Gofur Sheikh of Parla village said he cultivated turmeric with banana in the same land. He expressed the hope of making a handsome profit from the two crops.
Local trader Talebur Rahman said Magura growers produce quality turmeric every year. It has a good demand across the country.
Magura DAE official Rashidul Islam said turmeric farming is increasing fast. Growers make a good profit from the item every season.
