31 dope party men held in DMP drive

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) launched a massive crackdown early Thursday on 'ogyan' (dope) party men arresting a total of 31 people in an overnight drive from various parts of the capital for their alleged involvement in such criminal activities.
Detective Branch (DB) of police carried out the operation following information they gathered since Eid-ul-Azha when the number of mugging incidents by making people unconscious rose alarmingly in the capital.
Separate teams of DB, headed by police executive magistrates Abdul Kuddus and Sarwar Alam of the mobile court of DMP, arrested them from different parts of the city, said a DB official.
The mobile courts under Special Powers Act also awarded different jail terms ranging from one month to two years to the remaining others.
They also seized a large quantity of stimulating medicines, different kinds of food items used in making people unconscious and Tk 50,000 in cash from their possession.
The arrestees are: Mizanur Rahman Pintu (42), Jalil Bepari (55), Rashid (42), Babu (32), Kamruzzaman (25), Zahid (22), Niamul Haque (21), Khokon Mia (23), Moslem Mollah (35), Alam (22), Mizanur (42), Shariful (48), Sanwar (35), Rezaul (40), Osman Gani (25), Lal Mia (45), Gias Uddin (25), Mamun (40), Shaheed Ahmed (26), Ferdous (25), Abu Taher (28), Moksed Molla (40), Suman (23), Babu (18), Abdul Kader (40), Suman (25), Mawla Sarder (28), Md Oli (18), Aminul Islam (25), Jony (19) and Shaon Ahmed (18).
 "The arrested people were engaged in committing such crimes, which often cause deaths, in areas like bus and railway stations, launch terminals and other crowded places in the city," DMP Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam told reporters at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre Thursday noon.
He said they also arrested Mizanur Rahman Pintu, owner of Gauchhia Pharmacy at Fakirapool, along with 725 pieces of ATVN tablets, 10 mailam tablets, six dormicam tablets, used in making people unconscious.
Pintu, during preliminary interrogation, confessed that some gangs used to purchase stimulating tablets from him on a regular basis.
Following information extracted from him, DB police arrested six members of Shariful gang from Fakirapool, five members of Zahid gang from Gulistan, four members of Jalil Bepari gang from Kamalapur, five members of Mawla gang from Mohakhali bus stand, six members of Suman gang from airport intersection and four members of Mamun gang from Kalshi in Mirpur.
They also seized 225 pieces of ATVN tablets and different food items used in making people unconscious from their possession.
During preliminary interrogation, the criminals confessed to their link with doping and robbing people at different points of the capital.
The DMP Joint Commissioner said the criminals entertain their targets with foods and drinks mixed with high dose of sedatives, making them unconscious before taking away all the belongings from the victims.
 "We've information that there are 10 more such groups active in the city and our drives are on to nab them," he added.
