KHULNA, July 11 (UNB): Some 3,119 permanent workers and officials of the People's Jute Mill under Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) at Khalishpur have been terminated.
A fax message of BJMC in this connection was hung on the notice board of the mill at about 11:30 pm Tuesday.
The workers expressed apprehension that the mill might be declared closed today (Wednesday). The mill declared lay-off on April 19 in the face of labour unrest.
Mahbubul Alam, project chief of the mill, said he received a fax message signed by Abu Taher, Manager, Administration of BJMC, Tuesday night.
The mill, established on 70.29 acres of land in 1952, has at present a liability of Tk 3.50 billion (350 crore).
A tense situation has been prevailing in the mill area following the retrenchment of the workers.
